(or wbl). Canaanite noun *y bil-, ram, ram's horn. jubilee, from Hebrew yôb l, ram, ram's horn, jubilee (the latter probably originally “year of the ram's horn”).

West Semitic, to be(come) dry. calabash, perhaps from Arabic qarca y bisa, dried gourd, from y bisa, dried, feminine of y bis, participle of yabisa, to be(come) dry.

Common Semitic noun *yad-, hand.
1a. iota, jot, from Greek i ta, iota; b. yodh, from Hebrew y d, yodh. Both a and b from Phoenician *y d, hand, tenth letter of the Phoenician alphabet.
2. Betelgeuse, ultimately from Arabic yad al-jawz , hand of Gemini, from yad, hand.

West Semitic noun *yam n- and East Semitic noun *yamin-, right, right hand, south (on the right-hand side when facing east).
1. Benjamin, from Hebrew biny mîn, son of the right hand, from y mîn, right (hand), south. (The Israelite tribal name biny mîn should perhaps instead be understood as the “southerner” and to be compared to a people called “sons of the right/south” in Akkadian texts of the time of Hammurabi.) 2. Yemen, from Arabic yaman, right side, south, Yemen.

Common Semitic noun *yawm-, day.
1. Yom Kippur, from Hebrew yôm, day.
2. Enuma Elish (the name of the Babylonian creation epic), from Akkadian en ma elî , when on high (first words of the epic), from en ma, when, from ina, in, on + ma, adverbial accusative of mu, day (elî , on high; see cly).

Northwest Semitic noun *yawn-, feminine *yawnat-, dove. Jonah, from Hebrew yônâ, dove.
